I'm Nervous

I got called back to the final interview for being a teacher on the Peace Boat. Considering they only ever employ between 8 and 18 instructors per cruise, I figure I'm one of only so many. Anyway, the interview is this weekend in Tokyo, which I just came back from last week, and while its not particularly harrowing - a 10 minute demonstration lesson with 6 students, and a 15 minute interview with 3 or 4 interviewers - this is a super big deal for me. I almost hate getting call-backs cause then if I don't make it in its a million-times bigger of a let down.

Its been a while since I've been excited about any opportunity at all, much less one to circumnavigate the globe on a fucking cruise ship stopping at 30 some ports over the course of 3 months.

  1. By my shitty math that is probably wrong, there is between a 16.66% and 37.5% chance I'll be selected. That doesn't take into account factors like the 4 additional & desireable qualifications they listed (CELTA/TEFL/TESOL certification, Public speaking/stage performance experience, Japanese language ability, experience working/living in Japan/foreign cultures), 3 of which I possess, or super-human levels of charisma.

  2. I have a good feeling (I'll go as high as 86%) you are going to get this awesome job. I think you should go in there with the attitude that you have a 100% chance of getting the job, and totally knock their socks off. Nothing is more charismatic than well displayed confidence.

  3. Honestly, Nick, that's what I've decided to tell myself. This isn't some stupid gig that I want simply because I need to make money, but rather something that, when I think about it, actually excites me and seems to me something that I might possibly speak of many years later. And that's sometimes the tough part of interviews - pretending like you're interested. Fortunately, I don't have to fake that here. Doubly fortunate is that Peace Boat made a mistake in their initial email to me, and the date of the interview is actually next weekend, and not this weekend. They also confirmed that the interviews span only 2 days, and not 3 like I previously thought, which in my mind tells me that there is a maximum of 32 interviewees. If they decide to higher the minimum of 8, it seems to me I have a base likelihood of getting hired at around 25%, and if they go for the max of 18 hires then I'm looking at above 50%. Suffice to say, I had already started seriously planning for this interview, but with the extra week to prepare I'm going to do my best to walk into that interview as if I were made of gold.

  4. Dude, excellent news - I have consulted the I Ching on the matter and received hexagram 31 - here are the results:

The joyous Lake is cradled by the tranquil Mountain:
The Superior Person takes great satisfaction in encouraging others along their journey.
He draws them to him with his welcoming nature and genuine interest.

    Supreme success.

    Exegesis:

There is no greater natural law in the Cosmos than Attraction.
From the magnetic pull of an atom's nucleus to the centrifugal force that spirals a galaxy, the face of the universe is shaped by Attraction.
On a human scale, it is Attraction that fuels procreation and furthers our species.
Yet it is also Attraction that spawns greed and covetousness, threatening our extinction.
Attraction is the underlying force of the situation in question.
You are refined or debased by the objects of your desire.
What gravitational pull are you now under?
Around what sphere of influence do you circle?
Can you use your own ability to attract?
