Snow

As you many may have heard DC got some snow. I haven't had class since last Thursday since I don't have classes on Fridays. This is odd because I never had a class cancled at HWS because of snow. Our teachers are doubling up our classes next week to try to make it up, so I have to pay for my week of fun with a week of hell.

The city is just not prepared for it. My street still hasn't been plowed since the storm started on Saturday. Everyboday has been walking on the streets since the sidewalks are covered. The grocery stores are decimated. There wasn't any milk, eggs, and little produce when I walked there on Wednesday. I am interested to see what it is like for Nick or Lauren. My roommate took the picture below when he went to the national mall today.

National Security Blog

I have been writing for another blog for about a month for American Univeristy Law School's National Security Brief. A brief is a publication that a law school puts out about legal issues. The one I am one is about National Security as you can guess.

We are currently doing blog work until we come out with our spring publication, which I most likely won't be writing for since I am just in my first year. My posts day is Sunady and my posts are labeled VD and my most recent two are about Nevada fusion centers and the train bombing in Russia.

Can't beat Matt's posts

Ok I know there is no way to top Matt's posts especailly since I no longer have a life besides reading law school cases. With that high beat lead in I thought this one case was funny. This women contracted with a dance studio to teach her to dance and paid them over the course of two years $31,000 (this case took place in 1968) and they told her she showed great potential. Typically, for a contract not to be valid through fraud it has to be about a fact. For instance, I sold Peter my car and told him it was fine but it didn't have wheels. The court made a special circumstance in this case because she was such a bad dancer that obivously the dance studio was lying to her. The exact quote was, "the lessons sold to her (were) in total disregard to true physical, rhythm, and mental ability of the plaintiff." So basically this lady not only go screwed out of a bunch of money but a court of law is saying she is a really horrible dancer.

And that is the most exciting thing that happened to me this week.

Law School Posts are Borring

I haven't really been posting since there isn't much to say about law school. All I pretty much do is study. Here is a video of what my first day of law school felt like.

Everyone seems to be doing cool stuff though I just caught up reading on a bunch of past posts today.

Geneva Wedding

So I went back to Hobart a week ago. The occasion was seeing a fellow Statesman, Preston Rich, take part in matrimony. I don't know if you guys know Preston that well. I lived with him a summer in DC and he introduced me to my girlfriend. Anyway it was great to be back in Geneva.

The wedding was pretty crazy. I was a groomsmen. My duties included trying to persuade the five year-old ring bearer to come down the aisle by giving him a cookie. The thinking being that he wouldn't hand the rings over and I would have to persuade him into exchanging expensive jewelry for a sugary delight. I failed at this job because he ran down the aisle before he was supposed to. He spent the rest of the wedding sleeping in the rear of the church. I also got a cookie out of the failed mission ring swap mission, which since it was a Baptist wedding I counted as communion.

I also took it upon myself to call the best man "BM" all weekend from the time we tried on our tuxes, to the rehearsal, and all the way up to us sitting people in the church. Right before the ceremony he said to me, "Vince you know that is the medical term for bowel movement, right?" When I nodded sheepishly he revoked my candle lighting duties. It is sort of odd that one of my good friends committed himself to another person for his whole life, and I spent the weekend making jokes about fecal matter. I think it shows how both of us will spend our adult lives.

Anyone looking for a job?

This one comes courtesy of Meg while she was looking for jobs on craigslist:

Actor needed for emotional role One day high pay

Date: 2009-04-17, 12:52PM EDT

My deceased aunt gave my two kids a Cocker Spaniel a few months back. The dog has been a terror and become overwhelming for me. I am a single father raising two young children. I cannot face telling the kids that the dog must go. I have found a good home for the dog, and just need someone to transport the dog, and play the villain.

Premise: You will be the dog walker hired by daddy (me) to walk Skittles. I will introduce you to the kids, and you will tell them you are going to help Skittles get her exercise when Daddy is too busy to walk her. At that point you will walk Skittles to your car and take her to her new family 20 minutes from my place. Then return holding just a leash. The story will be that Skittles broke free of the leash and took off. At this point prepare for crying, things being thrown at you, and possibly cursing. My kids are young and dramatic, their girls.

Pay will be $500. The job will take roughly 2 hours at best.

This job is ideal for an actor looking to diversify their role base, or someone who genuinely likes to make children cry. Acting experience is a plus, but not necessary. Please inform me of any prior experience in this kind of situation.

Digging Up Bodies for the Mayor

My AmeriCorps year is almost finished and I am no longer in the classroom. The children made some cards, rap songs, and dance moves to say goodbye to me. This week for me is mostly service projects. For instance, yesterday I started some prep work on a community garden for an elementary school (only Nick will know where this is but it is near the Anacostia metro). The first job was to tear down the old garden, which required machetes, chainsaws, and a back hoe. The whole day we kept smelling something that sort of smelled like a wet dog. Well the mayor decided to come to kick off his new garden initiative and hold a press conference.

As the camera guy was setting up he stumbled over something in the ground in the playground. We pushed back the mulch and discovered a dead dog. It must have been there at least three months and the stench was absolutely horrible. The guy refused to film and mayor's aides told us we had to get rid of it. I had to dig up this dead dog and throw it in the back of a van. Later, I was talking to a local resident and he said that it was hit by the car and I thought he said its name was Shotgun. I asked him why they named the dead dog. He replied that the guy's name who buried it was Shotgun. Despite the problems the mayor held his press conference (I am standing in background on local DC TV) and I still smell like dead dog. A pretty typical week for me.

First Blog Post

So I asked Peter if I could be a contributor to the blog. He didn't have a problem with it and ran it by Andrew, who also didn't have any qualms either. Andrew was nice enough to add me rather quickly. So I owe both of those guys a thanks.

For my first post I wanted to relay a story I already let Andrew and Peter know about over gmail. My AmeriCorps year in a DC elementary school is wrapping up and I was hoping to leave a lasting positive impact on the lives of some children I work with. There were two children discussing the benefits of a world without money. Luckily I was there to quickly intervene and stop possible Communist sentiment. I asked them if they liked their x-boxes. They responded that they did. I told them that if there was a world without money there would be no x-boxes. They asked why and I explained to them that the entire world is motivated by money. If someone wasn't getting paid to make one then no one would do it. It took some more convincing but I was able to get both of them believe in capitalism once again and the world is safe again from the Reds. Your welcome.
