Matt, Vinnie, You Guys See This?

James Harrison Won’t Go To The White House

When the Pittsburgh Steelers visit the White House next week, they’ll do it without one of the men primarily responsible for their sixth Super Bowl title: Linebacker James Harrison.

“This is how I feel — if you want to see the Pittsburgh Steelers, invite us when we don’t win the Super Bowl,” Harrison said. “As far as I’m concerned, [Obama] would’ve invited Arizona if they had won.”

Um.

Um.

Um.

James, are you OK? Have you suffered any recent blunt trauma to the brain box?

It’s a ritual in this country that the major-league teams winning championships are invited to the White House for a visit.

So, yeah, the invitation applies only to the Super Bowl champs. It’s one of the things that make the accomplishment special.

And, no, the President doesn’t have the time or the desire to invite the 31 teams that didn’t win the Super Bowl to conduct seven-on-sevens in the Rose Garden. (After all, that might cut into the time he has allotted to work on his NCAA brackets.)

But, hey, at least we now have a better understanding of how the Steelers got Harrison to sign a long-term deal worth only $51 million.

  1. Pissed. Off. This is one thing that I've argued with my Pittsburgher friends - the Steelers are killer and all, but compared to the Pens as a team both on and off the field, they don't got shit. Sure, the Steelers have nary a legal/moral record RELATIVELY compared to other football teams, but the Pens are a group of genuinely nice/smart guys. Harrison's comment is what it is: dumb. I almost want to say that he doesn't know any better, but A.) its a chance to meet the pres and b.) its a chance to supercharge the already rabid fan base that the Steelers have. So yeah, I don't like this bit that Harrison has put out, Especially considering his (no denying it) fucking AWESOME role in the Steelers' win this year.

  3. Except the steelers won the superbowl and the penguins wont win shit but maybe another unfair draft pick. Carolina is a better team. So is Detroit.

  4. Two points. Yes that is ridicouls that Harrison won't go. Joey Porter said he wouldn't go meet Bush, but he went and they acted like buddies. My guess is Rooney will tell Harrison to go and he will comply.

Second I am not sure what James is smoking but maybe he can give it to Peter to sell. The only thing that Carolina has going for them is goal tending and a good defense. That broke down last night. Pittsburgh will easily take this series and then get destroyed by the Red Wings.

  6. hey what did you guys think about that dude from carolina attacking that dude from boston in game six? i promise to try to absolve any boston bias i may have in this discussion- i am looking for opinions more informed about hockey than mine.

  7. Sorry Vinnie, you're wrong. Carolina didn't break down last night. They just lost. It was the penguins who were held up by great goal tending, not carolina. I thought carolina played a better game and had many more quality chances. But this is why they play best of seven series. So the better team wins. You will see, carolina will win this series and get crushed by detroit.

Peter i don't think that guy attacked him as much as he just sucker punched him. Punching in hockey is compeletely regular, only this time the guy had his hands down and didn't react. So the guy punched him thinking they were about to fight when they weren't really. No real issue there other than the boston player shoulda at least covered his face even if he didn't want to fight back.

Vinnie, what do your grandmas think of the playoffs so far? My brother keeps saying that they were all pumped up about them at graduation.

  8. James if Carlonia did not get a last minute goal on the powerplay and with an extra attacker with the net minder out for the Canes.

As far as what my grandmother thinks. She really hate Ovichikin. She says he is a premodana mascarding as a tough guy who has to leave his feet to deliver a good hit. He also get away with too much. She also is upset with Fleury and thinks he is playing well.

Peter like Wilbe I think fighting is part of hockey. However, The fight does have to be fair. If one guy drops his gloves the other guy has to drop his gloves. The canes player should have made it a little clearer that a fight was to beging to make it fairer, but he recieved a fair punishment for his action in the playoffs.
