I am sure you all saw the almost perfect game pitched by the Detroit pitcher, Galarraaga, and the blown call by the first base umpire. I read an interesting post on another blog that despite the fact the ump made a bad call at first the runner was still safe. This is because a runner is not safe because he reaches the base before the ball gets to the bag, but because the first base umpire calls it this way. I think this is right. Anyone else agree?

i'm inclined to agree vinny. its from that logic that plate umps have "their own" strike zones, which pitchers and batters gotta adjust their game to. some times it benefits them, sometimes it doesn't. that's the game.
ReplyDeletei do support the instant replay in theory, but i've never read a thorough proposal for the rule that would account for all the potential gray areas the rule would create. what can be deemed a "game deciding moment?" could any home run be challenged? people talk about instant replay as a cure-all for bad calls, but for a game as slow and subjective as baseball any tweak should take careful consideration. i think situations like the one above are gonna stay unavoidable, for better or for worse.

ReplyDeleteRegardless, I think you guys might be right. But I'm really not an expert on the technicalities, so I can't say for sure.
Either way, the resolution afterward between the Ump & Galarraaga has in the meantime reinvigorated national attention to the sport in a positive light, which is great.
Baseball is so boooooooring. I don't caaaaaaaare.
